Mass transit will always have its place and the US seemingly has not done all that well in its investment (lack thereof) recently.

We've got the airlines, we've got a half ass, slow ass rail system (Amtrak) and some mass transit in some concentrated places.

Another long term solution is to continue with ICE passenger vehicles to whatever extent the market demands. Which will of course require infrastructure maintenance investment.
