and vast over-simplification.
The Diaspora happened in stages from Roman times (and before) both forced and voluntary and under Crusader, Muslim and Byzantine rule until the population dropped to only about 5000 people at the beginning of the Ottoman Empire. While the Crusaders killed and forcibly evicted many Jews (particularly in Jerusalem) and even enslaved them, most left under Muslim rule and generally due to discrimination rather than forced eviction.
