The hybrid style is what most bike makers feature, at least in the non-electric line-up. When I was shopping a few years ago, the reviewers had trouble picking among several makers - all were similar at similar price points. Trek has a good reputation in terms of the shops that carry their bikes and customer service.

As an aside, I now own a steel framed bike: a Salsa Fargo. And I had a Jamis hybrid which was also a steel frame bike. I find the steel a little more compliant in terms of ride comfort, and I ride quite a lot. However, they are more expensive that aluminum frames, which is reason the standard for 'intro level' bike shop bikes is aluminum IMO. You'll find that many makers have a more expensive 'touring' type model with a steel frame (often this is one of the most expensive models they sell).
