we had a bunch of iPads stolen from a work truck recently

They had the location services turned on, so we got a GPS coordinate on more than one of the devices coming from the same house about 10 miles from our campus. We called the police, gave them all the info, told them specifically what address they pinged from, gave them the IP address from which they last called home from, and the ISP that owned those IPs so the police could confirm with the ISP where that IP came from.

The police told us they couldn't do anything, would be our word against theirs and they're not going to go knocking on random doors based on a hunch.
