Today. They have been working for years to “reduce contact“ in the game, and their strategy for that has been to call more fouls thinking that by doing so the defense will touch the offense less. But what has happened is that since they will call a foul against the defense for damn near anything they have incentivized the offenses to go plowing in to the defense creating more contact knowing that the refs will bail them out.
If they truly want to clean up the game, they need to call more of those plays charges or let more of those plays go as a no call in overtime if the offense is not rewarded for that type of play then they will stop doing it and look to willingly maintain space themselves which is the only way you can truly cut down on contact.
In every other sport the guy with the ball, or puck, is incentivized to get away from the defense. Football, soccer, hockey, water polo, lacrosse….. they are all trying to get away from the defense.
Only in basketball do we reward the offense for trying to run into the defense.
