It wasn't even a top 50 team according to Kenpom and other computer models – despite having an NBA first-rounder inherited from the previous coach.
Last year's win total was mainly due to 3 things:
(1) An historically weak schedule. The non-con portion was arguably the weakest of all-time for the program.
(2) Extraordinary 'luck' in close 50/50 games; an extreme statistical outlier (top 10 out of 363 D-1 teams according to Kenpom's model).
(3) Talent inherited from the previous coach (in particular, NBA first-rounder Kobe Brown).
Take away *any* of those 3 factors, and last year's team never would have had an opportunity to get blown out by Princeton in the NCAA tournament.
This was apparent to me at the time, and I tried to explain it but no one wanted to hear it. Our AD was fooled as well, and now Gates has a $25M buyout.
