moderate success was all a mirage which, unfortunately, you and many others were fooled by. The season was not as good as it looked on paper. The schedule was extremely weak, the team had extraordinary luck in close games (as modelled by Kenpom), and the best player *by far* was inherited from Cuonzo.

Lastly, if Gates were white, he absolutely would NOT have been considered a "rising star" by anyone. His resume in the low-majors was not that impressive. IIRC, his best team at Cleveland State was ranked 170 in Kenpom.
