Bud Wilkinson's players joked they took a pay cut to go to the NFL. Those incentives were the only reason people showed up to desolate towns (like OK, NU, TAMU when Bryant was there, etc.) to play football. Same even for Manhattan KS.
There were always long-run, built-in advantages for nicer places like Columbia MO, Boulder CO, and I'll even say Lawrence - a nice enough town and close to KC. But they couldn't attract enough good football players (it takes a bunch) over the semi-pro outfits to matter.
