while a Pharisee and a scribe looked down upon the man and continued on. Then an outsider, a Samaritan who was reviled, stopped and gave aid. It was this outsider who did the will of God, of loving your neighbor as yourself, not the religious.
The parable of Jonah, a prophet told to go warn Nineveh of coming destruction unless they turn away from evil. Nineveh is part of Assyria, an enemy. Jonah doesn’t do what he’s told and punished. Even then when he does finally obey, the people of Nineveh, the outsiders, act in the will of God. Jonah goes off and pouts because God busted his us versus them mentality and God was merciful. It was Jonah, one of the religious, that was acting against God’s will.
The same problem exists today. The religious act contrary to God’s will. And that will is being peaceful, loving enemies, taking care of those in need, standing up against oppression and injustice.
