stupidity. His personality defects and insecurity are secondary issues.

If he was a somewhat functioning adult or of near average intelligence he wouldn't face the backlash from normal people he does. Until he started playing to conservative crowds he had probably never been in a room where he wasn't the stupidest person in the room.
