My uncle served in the Navy in the Pacific in WWII. He never talked about it that I ever heard. I am told he saw some terrible things and his ship was attacked by Kamikazes.
Back then they got close enough to each other to shoot each other and maybe even stab each other. Nowadays they launch drone strikes.
