It appears members of the Freedom Caucus wanted to meet with McCarthy throughout last summer to talk about reforms should he become Speaker and he would not meet with them. Likely because he expected to win a large margin in the fall election and would not need their support. Only when the margin became this small did he agree to meet with them about their views.

Leadership is a 24/7/365 job, not simply when you think you have to act like a leader.
