I wonder about this reliance on belief systems. Many - perhaps even most - put a great deal of weight on this idea. I am on the fence regarding this.

Furthermore is there an issue if one's beliefs evolve. Many in America opposed bi-racial marriage, bi-racial unions, because in essence it was believed to be wrong. For a very long time the idea of homosexuality was considered an abomination. We, in America, came around on both of those ideas. Changing one's position, one's belief upon reflection I would propose to be a good thing.
Now if the only driving force is votes than I buy your position on it.
