Lots of outgoing coaches (non fired category) try to hand pick their successor, usually a loyal assistant. It’s up to a strong AD to resist that pressure and do what’s best for the team and school in the long run. This case of course was besmirched by the rank nepotism shown by Kreklow, and Sterk should have been strong enough to resist that. I can understand making the guy interim coach, because Kreklow dishonestly timed his leaving to give Sterk no choice but to appoint the family member on staff as interim. Sterk should have never made him permanent coach with a contract extension before the season was even over, he should have done a true nationwide search at the end of the first season. But didn’t.

Kreklow was a great coach here but I have zero respect for him now for what he pulled here. It set the program back who knows how many years, all so he could have the personal satisfaction of having his nieces husband placed in a head coaching position he was not remotely qualified for.

But Sterk let it happen. Shame on him.
