they want to be able to claim force majeure for not providing gas to Europe, which is a defense to breach in their contract. Whereas refusing to provide gas is a definitive breach and subjects them to liability in a court of law.
They also want a pretext to blame more things on the West, as we already see them doing. It also acts as sort of a Cortes burning his ships type moment to illustrate that he intends to stay the course and that the Europeans are in for the long haul with energy issues.
BUT...Europe has already turned that page anyway. Germany was the last hold out and they are already looking at other non-Russo options.
So what does Putin have to lose by wrecking his own pipeline based on the above?
Not much.
