all other things being equal, electric motors produce far more torque/acceleration than gas counterparts but it depends on how the motors are calibrated, etc. I would think lugging around a gas engine all the time would not be great for battery life or acceleration. Or, if it's a pretty small 4-cyl (or less) the acceleration with the gas motor is going to be anemic.
