Most seem to strongly oppose hiring Gates, but I've seen a few here who claim he would be a better hire than Kim English – which is baffling to me.
To be clear, I'm not saying Kim should be our top target, or even on the short list for that matter.
But if it's strictly a choice between Gates and Kim, the decision should be obvious:
• Gates was mentored by Leonard Hamilton.
• Kim was mentored by Rick Barnes.
Winner: Kim
• Gates was hired by Cleveland State.
• Kim was hired by George Mason.
Winner: Kim
• Gates has no ties to MU.
• Kim has strong ties to MU.
Winner: Kim
• Gates has a dull personality (watch his interviews).
• Kim is one of the most charismatic players/coaches this fan base has ever seen.
Winner: Kim
• Gates, if successful, would leave for another job.
• English, if successful, would be far more likely to stay.
Winner: Kim
Overall, Kim would be a high-risk, high-reward hire... and he could very well fail. But at least it would be fun seeing what he's capable of here. Deep down, I want to see him given a chance. It's sort of a "brain says no, heart says yet" feeling, but I do think he has potential to be great at MU.
I just don't see that with Gates. He seems more like a random, run-of-the-mill guy who's being considered for the wrong reasons.
