That we will make the tournament and be in the middle third of the SEC, hopefully towards the top of that middle third.
It’s pretty clear not halfway through the season that the best 4 teams are SC, Tennessee, LSU and Georgia. TAMU was picked to finish 2nd by the coaches but that's of course not going to come close to happening. I still think Kentucky is the 5th best team, but after that it’s a real toss up as to who that middle third is and how they rank with respect to one another.
I still think Auburn, Vandy, and Florida will finish somewhere in the 11-14 spots in the standings, the question is who joins them there. Alabama probably.
So that leaves the middle third to be Missouri, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss St. and TAMU. Right now all 5 of those teams are projected to make the NCAA tourney, but TAMU and Miss St just by the skin of their teeth; they are listed by ESPN as literally the last 2 teams to get an at large bid. So to me right now the battle for 6-8 in the conference is between Missouri, Ole Miss, and Arkansas, and one of those teams could conceivably get hot and push Kentucky for 5th place. It would help our chances of finishing 5th or 6th tremendously to get Williams back and healthy soon.
But we really need to take care of Vandy on the road tomorrow and a reeling TAMU team at home on Sunday, otherwise this season could start to go south in a hurry. After we started 2-0 in the conference I said the next 5 game stretch would be very tough, and predicted we could go anywhere from 3-2 to 0-5 against Arkansas, LSU, Georgia, Vandy and TAMU. Well, we are 0-3 so far on that stretch, and need to win the next two games to get to 4-3 in the conference.
