It's more damning to just be bad at your job than to have bad results due to not caring. Neither is a good look. But in this situation, it's more of an indictment of him as a coach to say he cares and then produces these results.

What evidence do we have of this attitude of not caring? He and the staff work hard enough to be among the final choices of so many good recruits, then they can't close. That's not a lack of caring or effort. That's a lack of recruiting skill.

The team plays hard, they're just not as good as many of their opponents, mainly because of the lack of recruiting success. Guarantee if the players, who have so much interaction with the coach, sensed he was mailing it in, then their effort would be noticeably worse.
