almost immediately:
Consider:
1. Missouri doesn't produce a lot of high quality basketball prospects. Those that it does produce tend to be black kids from the greater St. Louis metro area, i.e. Bardley Beal and Jayson Tatum come to mind.
2. The thinking was Mizzou could recruit those kids if (a) it had a black head coach and a (b) a good program.
3. Hiring Martin satisfied 2(a) above. Plus, he's a St. Louis metro area product.
4. Getting the Porter family to return to Columbia and the sons to enroll would go a long way to satisfying 2(b). I.e. an immediate, hopefully deep trip in the NCAA under the a Black coach who happened to be a local product would quick start the program and generate immediate fan interest.
5. Unfortunately, if something could wrong in the scheme, it did and not much has gone right since.
6. The solution is either (a) let Martin serve out the seven year term of his contract and if he doesn't get things together, start over or (b) pay Martin off and start over.
