Despite what some of you may think, I tried to be patient with him in the first couple seasons – just in case his coaching acumen was able to compensate for his mediocre recruiting – but it was apparent early on that wasn't the case.
So unfortunately, that created a situation similar to Kim Anderson – a lameduck coach who needed to be ousted as soon as possible, for the sake of the program (which always comes first).
I wish that hadn't been the case with Kim or Odom, since they're alums, but the programs aren't nepotistic charities. We needed to move on, and if we had hired the BB coach I lobbied for in 2017 then both programs would have an elite recruiter at the helm:
