That was Tim Wolfe's call. Bowtie was trying to salvage his working relationship with his boss and was on board with the hire.

No matter who was interested in the Mizzou job Wolfe was hellbent on bringing in the guy he thought should have followed Norm. Alden had two choices, go along or get fired. He took the option most would take.

Not to say Mike didn't have his faults. He didn't handle chaos well (Quin/Clemons, etc.) but there's no way one can fairly pin the Kim disaster on Mike Alden.
