Smith took over in the dregs with terrible facilities and no academic window for athletes. His work was amazing and he fought for things Pinkel later took advantage of like much better facilities and favorable admission standards. Fred Hall, president of the BOC, had to fire the chancellor Charles Kiesler to pave the way for the things Smith wanted and needed.
