And it generally occurs on a geological rather than human time scale. The last glacial period was ~ 10,000 years ago. Glacial cycles occur over thousands of years but the climate change we are discussing here has happened over the last 40 years.
We live in a cause and effect world, I don't see why people have a hard time understanding that putting unprecedented amounts of carbon into the atmosphere could have an impact on climate. It wouldn't be the first time life has changed the climate; the atmosphere was largely CO2 and N until blue green algae evolved a couple of billion years ago.
You can write off climate change all you want but it will have an impact on our lives. It will first impact people that live in already stressed areas such as arid and semi-arid climates or subsiding coastal areas like southern Louisiana. You don't have to think all that hard to understand some of the implications.
