The Dems correctly saw this as an issue they could lay at the feet of Trump and use it to defeat him. On both the domestic and international front everything was humming along. Covid is the single reason Biden is president now. No one can seriously dispute that.
The reason I said political correctness was the second factor was due to the fact that Covid is only a real threat to very specific populations that have certain comorbidities. Most of those were due to lifestyle choices or old age. One of the reasons it hit the US so hard is that we are all fat as fück. But we are not allowed to fat shame so no one came out and simply stated that Covid was a danger to the unhealthy and the old which is basically what it comes down to.
