and escalates into an "arms race" similar to what we've seen with facilities and coaching contracts over the last 20 years.
It's a constant uphill battle and one that we cannot possibly win.
It's why "NIL" (bribes dressed up as endorsement deals) are so bad for the college game.
I put NIL in quotes because it's *not* name-image-likeness compensation in practice, it's pay-for-play. The "deals" have little-or-nothing to do with legitimate *endorsement deals* (i.e. businesses paying fair-market-value for promotional services to increase their bottom line). Instead, it's fans & boosters funneling money through businesses for the primary purpose of attracting and retaining players, which is the definition of pay-for-play.
There's no avoiding it at the college level, and it's virtually impossible to police.
