There are a number of international treaties, conventions, etc that govern the conduct of war. The go back several centuries. Among the areas covered are the treatment of prisoners, I.e. the Geneva Convention.
The Nuremberg War Trials following WWII saw numerous Germans tried for violations of these conventions, treaties. The trials were conducted by the winning nations, I.e. Great Britain, U.S., France and Russia. In addition to the initial war trials against twenty or so leading members of the Nazi government and the German military, there were ongoing trials over approximately five years.
