picture taken of the Rams draft class that year(7 players I think) it was pretty clear he didn't have an NFL physique-even the player that was smaller than him was bulkier. Maybe steroids IDK, but he didn't look like he belonged in the group physically, and without being particularly fast it wasn't a surprise he didn't make it. I think it was Ealy that was on the other end of the line that year, he went in the 2nd if I remember correctly. Sam really benefitted from him being on the line at the same time.
