except for this year, but still managed to reach the title game of the NIT in a "down" year. This is his floor, not his ceiling.
The first 2 years were rebuilds for Howland, just as they were at Pitt and UCLA.
Then he took MSU from 12th —> 7th —> 6th —> 4th in the SEC last year (when the tourney was cancelled).
He has had tourney-worthy teams in 3 of the past 4 years, and was very close this year.
Finally, MSU was a complete rebuild situation when he arrived, and it's the toughest place to win in the SEC. I'm 100% certain that he would have done extremely well had he taken the job here in 2014, or if he had inherited Geist, Barnett, and all the recruits and transfers that followed the Porters to MU in 2017.
