Columbia is further away from Missouri's population centers. That same proximity helps fill up Allen Field House routinely as well. But the professional sport dynamic is very important throughout the SEC. Even Florida, which has a ton of professional sports teams now, didn't have any until the Dolphins came to Miami in 1966 giving collegiate athletics a lot of time to establish themselves as part of the culture.
