Seemingly it is based on your impression that our "welfare state" was designed or carried out as a means to lift the impoverished to what you might view as middle class respectability. And you CANNOT have a Social Darwinist cut-to-the-bone Capitalist state where "real success and true compassion" provide some pathway.
WALMART employees, full-time workers across this country rely on FOOD STAMPS of SNAP or Housing assistance to get by, while Bezos and Kroenkes are lavished with billions. That system does not work. It fails the vast majority of Americans - and all the while morinskies on the right call for less taxes on those so lavished. Speaking of which, I got work to do.
As for not having an implact, hungry kids fed, hungry people fed - is an impact, the cold who get warmth is an impact.
