I used to tell people that I always respected teachers until I sat in my first faculty meeting.
Just like with any large group of people the vast majority a good, ethical and hard working. Also like any group we tend to be judged by our worst members. Everyone remembers the seemingly weekly stories of a teacher sleeping with their students or those refusing to go back to work for purely political reasons. What we forget are the teachers who stay after work every day on their own time tutoring students so they pass difficult subjects or the coaches that don't see their families for months during the season because they are with our kids sometimes 30 hours a week after hours or the band teachers who somehow put up with kids butchering their instruments while attempting to learn to play an instrument in hopes that they can cultivate a love of music in just a few of them.
I am not offended when people discuss obvious problems with our educational system. I just try to remind them that we really want to avoid throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
