COVID spreads easier than the flu, so any compliance with COVID will improve the flu at an even higher rate.

I believe (could be wrong) that the flu has its initial spread at beginning of flu season through international travel.....as seasons transition from one place of winter to another...given that international travel is at a near standstill, there has been much less mixing....while COVID is pretty much everywhere (except places like Australia, New Zealand and more tightly locked islands.

We also don't really do near the level of surveillance with the flu, so the numbers could be skewed with that as well.
