We let an under-talented team stay with us and then pull ahead by having little urgency on defense much of the game. There were several plays where we were out of position and Arkansas gashed us. We didn't start to focus until after we lost the heart and soul of our defense. Why we weren't up for this game is beyond me.
At the end of the game, all we had to do was knock down the ball on the two-point conversion to seal the win. Instead, our linebacker popped it into the air while trying to catch it where it was caught the Arky receiver. Remember the Fleakicker? That would have been a typical Missouri ending to a game where we somehow wrenched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Barry Odom is a loyal Missouri guy. 17 years with us in one capacity or another. He took the job when things were a mess and probably nobody better wanted the job. He worked hard. He didn't met the standard necessary so we made a change. He didn't trash the school on his way out. Imagine how hurt he probably was when he felt like he didn't get enough time as the head coach at the school he loves, but there were no public sour grapes. He's a good defensive coordinator (unlike what some of you think) and a coach that is respected by his peers. He was hired immediately by a school in the best football conference in our country. He will have better days after they upgrade talent and kids have been in his system a couple years.
Our offense has finally gotten untracked on the ground and in the air the last two games because we got two offensive line starters back where we have little depth and have played against two below average conference teams. That was the difference today, along with Drinkwitz's focus and calm in directing us. On defense we still can't get to the quarterback against even decent offensive lines, and that is always a killer.
I'm impressed with Drinkwitz, but Barry Odom is a good, loyal guy who gave his best, who is better, even with his flaws, than a lot of you give him credit for.
We won. Have respect for other teams, their kids and coaches. Our coaching staff does. If they don't, we won't ever be a consistent winner.
