If it happens, it's something that has been planned for a long time. There are several people that would keep it a close race. But their advantage would be they have been preparing it for a long time and Trump will have to quickly adapt to the new candidate. But I'm sure Trump has also prepared for this possibility to some degree.
The problem would be fracturing the party if they didn't pick Sanders, which would guarantee a defeat in November. If they can keep the party together without picking him in place of Joe, it will still be close.
