if that is the excuse they will use to nominate someone else.

The alternative is even worse, nominating him when he won't make an appearance. They should get absolutely roasted for that. With his obvious mental decline issues (everyone is now talking about it) it looks bad and is a very weak position for the democrats. But their polls aren't looking good, so maybe they just don't care.
