Congress did not recognize the CSA so really it was not a War, more of a government tamping down an armed revolt by the states. All the names of confederate Generals were great Soldiers before the armed uprising.
They are also named the forts normally in the states they came from.
Now the one thing you can grip about was they named them to placate the local populace, but we are still talking about 40-50 years after the War. The south could have rose again and we can't have that with the Army in Europe. By naming the forts after the people the local populace looked up to, it was thought to make them feel they were Americans fighting for one cause.
For your last question, less and less every year. I really don't think you will find many people who think Slavery was a good thing. And like everything else the meaning changes overtime and I think the Idea of the rebel spirit attracts people to the south's cause, not really what they did.
