reports from official sources. Hospitals were allegedly often giving closer to real time data to the media.

Of course, there are questions about doctors being pressured to attribute deaths when it might be questionable.

On the other hand New York had a far bigger spike in deaths for April vs the standard numbers than was attributed to COVID-19.

The increase in the number of actual deaths vs normal was some 4,000 more than the number of deaths attributed to COVID-19.

The exact numbers are impossible to pin down because of multiple variables and a bit of guessing that is always necessary when there are multiple contributing causes, but it is quite likely that the COVID numbers, at least in New York, are not being over counted. It is quite possible that they are being under counted.

There may be additional deaths due to domestic violence and suicides during the lockdown, but those are probably more than offset by a reduction in deaths from auto accidents, work related accidents and so on.
