If the data is bad the model is bad.

At the beginning the data was all over the place but as it became more refined the model did what it should and corrected itself. We also cannot discount that the model in the beginning was reflecting the fact that the US or states were following 0 social distancing guidelines (february, and half of march). As more and more states adopted guidelines and as the virus spread they were able to more accurately predict what will happen.

What more would you want? That the data be perfect? The data comes from humans after all, and for these guys the data is coming from all over the world.

The IMHE model is by far and away the most accurate model.
