Most AD's are part of the schools, not seperate entities.

Most college athletic departments are part of their schools. The school owns the income, pays the expenses and gets the net income or takes net loss.
That's the arrangement at Mizzou. The Tiger Athletic Department is just another department at UMC. Separate financial accounting records are kept for it (as they are for most departments), but if it generates net income, it belongs to the University and if it has a net loss, the University eats it.
