It makes perfect sense to me. Most people, right or wrong, would acknowledge saying the N word by a white person is considered taboo, while black people, at times, and within their own social circles, use the n word quite often.
Why that is, I don't know exactly. I do observe it occasionally, but have not bothered to ask why.
Having a gay brother, I have seen similar things amongst that culture as well.
It seems quite common that people do act differently when within a culture, and if an outsider tries to act the part, some, but not always all, get offended....so I just act like me around them. Seems pretty easy to do.
