do you go around intentionally offending others? A previous company had a pretty good take on the golden rule....instead of treating others like you want to be treated....treat others how they want to be treated.
Personally, I agree with you that words mean nothing and it is a bunch of gibberish...at the same point, I will respect the culture of others since it is generally not difficult to do and will not harm me in any way.
If I know someone I trust to be open, I might pull them aside or take them out for a beer and ask them about it and learn from it.
