First, Pinkel was a proven head coach before he ever came to Mizzou. So he had experience building a program, hiring good assistants/coordinators, bouncing back from bad seasons, etc.
Second, he learned the trade as an assistant under a Hall of Fame coach in Don James and was the offensive coordinator of a national championship team at Washington. He took the lessons learned and incorporated them into his own coaching style. Meanwhile, Odom learned under Larry Smith (not a bad ooach, but certainly not a great one) as an assistant at Mizzou and Justin Fuente at Memphis (who's done an average job at Va Tech and seems to be trending lower there as the years go by).
Third, Pinkel had brought almost his entire staff to Mizzou when he came here, while Odom had to build one from scratch. And some of his hires, especially the one of Demonte Cross as DC, were head-scratching at best.
