(NY Times). In an effort to keep students in the stadium throughout football games, Alabama has begun tracking them on their phones. Students receive "Tide Loyalty Points" on the FanMaker app, including a reported 100 points for attending a game and an additional 250 for staying until the fourth quarter. If fans leave the game early, the app knows and won't award points needed for perks like College Football Playoff tickets. Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne said that students aren't tracked while outside the stadium and added that students can turn off or delete the app if needed. FanMaker runs apps for 40 colleges, including Clemson, Louisiana State and Southern California and typically rewards fans with gifts like T-shirts. The app it created for Alabama is the only one that tracks the locations of its students. One student said: “I think it’s stupid. It’s 100 degrees and, personally, I don’t think it’s safe. I’m not sticking around just to get loyalty points.”
