become generally accepted. it's like a weird transitive property applied to a belief system.

if racist person A says something positive about person B, then person B must also be racist.

or better, if person A is found to have committed some offense in their past, then all persons who were ever associated with that person must also be guilty of that same offense, or at least support that offense. look at the harvey weinsteine stuff or the more recent guy whose name escapes me. everyone combs through all their past relationships and finds a picture of the two of them at a fundraiser for cancer research and exclaims with shock "AHA this is proof that so-and-so is also a sexist mysogonistic pedopihile rapist!!!"
