schedule as many top tier teams. All of the top teams had to play more games against each other, because there were fewer options. While we should be looking to play some, but not all top-tier teams, those other power teams are also looking for a chunk of easy games as well.
Say for example, North Carolina who we played twice in the season mentioned above. Back then, they had a choice between Mizzou, or say a MoValley team. For risk/reward, might as well play Mizzou.
Today, that choice is Mizzou or Incarnate Word. If they already have 2-3 “big” games, risk/reward says play the cupcake.
You can pooh-pooh the idea all you want to, but it is definitely a factor. The fact that teams play more games during the season is also a factor.
More games, and more available easy teams, means more easy opponents
