Hip-style roofs, they withstand wind the best

Tons of older homes, ranches, split levels, etc. have hip-style roofs, but it seems it's almost never used in new construction anymore. The rooflines on newer houses are almost always gable nowadays, just too complex, too many differing levels, dormers, etc.
