years in SEC football and basketball combined?
We are currently 29-70, with only a few SEC basketball games left (mercifully) to end the season.
Here's the breakdown:
SEC Football record:
2015 1-7
2016 2-6
2017 4-4
2018 4-4
Total 11-21
SEC Basketball record:
2015-16 3-15
2016-17 2-16
2017-18 10-8
2018-19 3-10
Total 18-49
Thoughts:
- While the move to the SEC has brought a significant increase in revenues, we somehow still managed to lose money over the past few years. It's not complicated, don't spend more than you have.
- Are we a good fit in the SEC?
Culturally? No! All states within the SEC footprint are conservative, while Mizzou has become one of the most liberal schools in the country. In fact, Mizzou no longer mirrors the culture of the state of Missouri as a whole. Over 90% of Missouri counties are conservative, yet the university has become more aligned with left-wing schools like Cal-Berkley. Many rural Missourians no longer identify with the University of Missouri.
Logistically? No! COMO/Mid-Mo is a relatively small market that has numerous other options (Cardinals, Chiefs, Royals and the lake) competing for entertainment dollars. Most fans/alums from metro KC and STL will only drive to Columbia a few times a year. Other SEC schools have more single-minded fan bases, especially those located in states with no competing professional sports teams.
Conclusion: Regarding football and basketball, it's irrational to think that we can consistently compete in the SEC in the future. While it's possible to occasionally have some competitive teams, we simply don't have the resources in terms of population or fan support to compete with the upper-echelon of the SEC, especially in football. I believe Gary Pinkel was a tremendous coach, certainly one of the best in Mizzou history. I also believe that we have the right person in Barry Odom currently leading the program. If Odom can go to a bowl game the majority of the time, that's realistically all we should expect. Unless numerous things change, there will be no SEC championships in football for Mizzou. We are who we are!
