In the case of the Dems picking up 40 house seats it's a combination of voters wanting a check on Trump, and a growing contingent on the far left wanting things like gun control, universal healthcare, progressive taxes, etc.

I'm not advocating for any of those things necessarily, just pointing out that Dems have momentum because of those things.
