"illegal immigration" was down during Obama's tenure; deportations were up. The use of drones & technology is likely more effective than bricks & mortar at this point.

I disagree with the "heavily taxing" - you can't really limit where American citizens choose to send/spend their $.

I'm more in favor of ("regulated") work visas - welcome the labors here & ensure that they go back/take $ back with them.
